Speak Up! - Ally Week

29 July - 4 August

Join our Ally Week to show your support for increased funding for independent advocacy.

The lack of additional advocacy funding in the Budget has left many advocacy organisations making hard decisions to limit their supports to the most urgent matters, close valued programs and let go of skilled staff.

The Disability Royal Commission (DRC) and the NDIS Review have both highlighted the vital role of independent disability advocacy and the need for increased funding. Despite this acknowledgment, advocacy organisations are struggling with inadequate resources. Without immediate government action, more organisations will lose staff and turn away increasing numbers of people with disability in crisis.

That’s why, as we approach critical government decisions, we are launching an Ally Week to ask our friends and supporters to help address this urgent crisis. By talking about why funding for independent advocacy is important to you and your organisation, you will be helping to share our message far and wide.

We are hopeful that the combined strength of voices from our allies, people with disablity, their families, and advocates will urge governments to invest in meeting the long-term demand and need for advocacy.

We ask all allies of disability advocacy and people with disability, their families and carers to show their support of our call for increased funding to address this crisis.

When: Monday, 29 July to Sunday, 4 August

What: Ally Week for advocacy friends, supporters and families to demand increased funding for disability advocacy by sharing what advocacy means to them.

Where: Anywhere and everywhere! On your socials, websites and any newsletters.

How: Read on below for the actions to show your support

Take Action

Action 1: Online communities

For one targeted week starting on Monday 29 July, we want to flood online media with our calls to fund advocacy organisations in crisis.

Take a photo of you with #SpeakUp4Advocacy written on paper, or print this poster, and upload to social media and tag members of government.

Create a video from a spokesperson at your organisation, advocating why you are supporting additional funding for independent advocacy.

Action 2: Email the government

Not into social media but want to take action? You or your organisation can email government to demand their additional investment in independent advocacy.

Share your name, and any examples of how advocacy has supported your organisation or yourself personally. Ask that they listen to the Disability Royal Commission (DRC) and the NDIS Review who both highlighted the vital role of independent disability advocacy in their final reports, and the need to increase funding to meet demand.

Video Transcript:

Hello, my name's Sarah Gingold from DSC. At DSC, we support this campaign to increase the funding for disability advocacy services. Between the NDIS, Education, Centrelink, we've created very complex systems for supporting people with disability. These complex systems tend to mean that people with access to more education, informal support networks, resources, get better outcomes. And that's not the system any of us envisioned. Disability advocacy can be the great equaliser that allows anyone to get the great outcomes they deserve. And that is why we're supporting this campaign. Thank you.
